BMW Valve Cover Gasket Replacement Cost: $417-$1,122

BMW is one of the most expensive brands for this repair, but the range is wide. An older inline-6 with a conventional gasket is around $450. A modern turbo engine with an integrated plastic cover can pass $1,000 because you replace the whole cover, not a $20 seal.

Older inline-6 (M54 / N52)

Conventional gasket, 325i / 328i

Turbo, integrated cover (N20 / N55 / N63)

$680-$1,122

Whole cover replaced, 335i / X3 / X5

Why One BMW Costs $450 and Another Costs $1,100

Conventional cover (cheaper)

Older naturally-aspirated inline-6 engines (M54 in the E46 325i, N52 in the E90 325i/328i) use an aluminium or magnesium valve cover with a separate rubber gasket. When it leaks you clean the surface and fit a new gasket, around $58-$78 in parts. The total lands at $417-$650 because the cover itself is reused.

Integrated cover (pricier)

Turbocharged engines (N20, N26, N55, B48, B58, N63) use a plastic valve cover with the crankcase-ventilation diaphragm and oil separator built in. The plastic warps and cracks with heat cycling, so the fix is a complete cover assembly at $150-$400 for the part plus 2-4 hours of labor. That pushes the total to $680-$1,122.

Which BMW Engines Are Known for Valve Cover Leaks

Valve cover and cover-gasket failure is one of the most common oil leaks across the modern BMW range. The usual culprits:

  • N20 / N26 (2.0T): 328i, 320i, X1, X3, 528i. The plastic cover and integrated PCV are a frequent leak point from around 60,000-90,000 miles.
  • N54 / N55 (3.0T): 335i, 535i, X5 35i. Cover-gasket and PCV seepage is common; oil often appears down the back of the engine.
  • N63 (4.4 twin-turbo V8): X5, X6, 550i, 750i. Two integrated covers in a hot, tight valley make this the most expensive version of the job.
  • M54 / N52 (older inline-6): 325i, 328i, 525i, Z4. Conventional gasket leaks here are cheaper to fix but very common with age.

Signs Your BMW Valve Cover Gasket Is Leaking

  • Burning-oil smell after driving, especially at stops
  • Oil pooling in the spark plug wells (can cause misfires)
  • Visible oil down the side or back of the engine
  • Smoke from the engine bay when oil hits the exhaust manifold
  • Low oil level between services with no obvious puddle
  • Rough idle or a stored misfire code on N20/N55 engines

On turbo engines, a leaking valve cover often goes hand in hand with a failing PCV diaphragm, which is one reason shops replace the whole cover. See the full leak symptoms guide.

BMW Valve Cover Gasket FAQ

How much does a BMW valve cover gasket replacement cost?

Between $417 and $1,122 depending on the model and engine. Older inline-6 BMWs with a conventional valve cover (like the M54/N52 325i) run $417-$605. Modern turbo engines with an integrated plastic cover (N20, N55, B58, N63) run $650-$1,122 because the whole cover assembly is replaced, not just a gasket.

Why is a BMW valve cover gasket so expensive compared to a Honda?

Two reasons. First, most modern BMW engines use a plastic valve cover with an integrated crankcase-ventilation system, so when the seal fails you replace the entire cover ($150-$400 for the part) rather than a $20 gasket. Second, BMW labor rates at dealers and specialists run $130-$200/hr and the job often takes 2-4 hours.

Is it the gasket or the whole valve cover that fails on a BMW?

On older M54/N52 engines it is usually just the rubber gasket. On turbocharged N20, N26, N55, B48, B58 and N63 engines the plastic cover itself warps or cracks around the integrated PCV diaphragm, so most shops replace the complete cover and gasket as one job.

Can I replace a BMW valve cover gasket myself?

On an older inline-6 with a conventional cover it is a moderate DIY job. On the turbo engines it is harder: charge piping and the integrated PCV system make it a shop job for most owners, and the plastic cover bolts must be torqued to spec to avoid cracking.
